DocuSign Integration
How Meet U @ The Net uses DocuSign
Meet U @ The Net is a Santa Monica beach volleyball league. We engage independent-contractor referees each season to officiate and score games. Before a referee can work, they must sign two documents:
- An Independent Contractor Agreement, signed once per season (re-signed whenever an admin flags the referee for a new season), and
- A W-9, signed once when the referee first joins.
We use DocuSign’s eSignature API to collect these signatures. From the referee’s onboarding page in our app, we generate a DocuSign envelope from one of our two pre-built templates (contract or W-9) and open an embedded signing sessionso the referee signs directly inside our site — no separate DocuSign account or email-based signing flow is required on their end.
Authentication to the DocuSign API uses a JWT grant (server-to- server), scoped to our own DocuSign account. We also subscribe to DocuSign Connect webhook events so that if a referee finishes signing but closes the browser tab before being redirected back to our site, we still learn the envelope completed and update their status automatically. Incoming Connect webhook requests are verified with an HMAC signature before we trust them.
A referee is only allowed to officiate or score games once both of their documents show a completed status in DocuSign. Until then, our app redirects them back to onboarding. Site administrators are never gated by this check.
We do not resell, share, or otherwise use referee document data for anything beyond verifying contractor and tax-form compliance for our own league operations.
